In honor of Earth Day and in conjuction with Pick Up The Poconos, Milford Enhancement Committee leads a community clean up day. Volunteers gather at the Community House to form crews and receive their assigned area throughout Milford’s commercial district and parks. Later we gather at Ann Street park for a lunch provided by the MEC. This year the MEC will honor Paul Labounty, a retired U.S Forest Service employee and Milford resident who has served for many years with the Milford Shade Tree Commission.
Our annual event is called the “Welcome Party” because it is designed specifically to welcome new residents to the area and to welcome back our seasonal residents. The Party features a full dinner with wine and beer, live musicians, themed decorations and an amazing auction led by our mayor. The annual Welcome Party not only raises funds for streetscape and landscaping improvements in Milford, but it also introduces new residents to those of us who have been in civic activities for many years. This is an important part of the MEC’s mission: to strengthen the social bonds in our community which result in heightened civic engagement and volunteerism. Each year the event co-chairs are a combination of long-time residents and newcomers, just like the people attending the party. That’s the magic of the Welcome Party, connecting those who have worked for decades to keep Milford as special as it is today with those that have just recently moved here, attracted by our pristine natural environment, historic charm and cultural vitality. For more than 16 years, the annual Welcome Party has been the MEC’s largest fundraising activity of the year. While state and federal grants provide the bulk of the construction funding for improvements we have undertaken, the design, engineering and estimating expenses must be raised privately.
